Tours are offered on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 9:30. Space is limited to four family groups, so we encourage interested families to call and reserve a date. It is okay for your children to tour with you, just let us know. Parent Open House for interested families is set for Tuesday, February 2 at 6:30-8:00 (snow date of February 4). Call to reserve your spot. No child care will be available. Basic information about application, admission, and enrollment at ArtSpace, as well as our Lottery and Wait Lists, is included here for your review. If answers to your questions are not found in this information, you may call the school office. I.APPLICATION Application packets are available at the school during regular school hours, or can be mailed to families. At this time, applications are not available on our website. To qualify, a student’s parent or legal guardian must be legally domiciled in the state of North Carolina, and must provide documentation of such at the time of application. Applicants can live in any county in NC. Out-of-State applications will not be considered. Students protected by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Act are qualified. Prospective parents, including families with currently enrolled students, must submit a complete application for each child they want to enroll. An application will be considered “complete” only if all the information requested is given, the information is truthful, and the parent/legal guardian has signed the form. A student may apply for only one grade. Kindergarten students must be five years old by August 31st. Sibling applications are given preference in the Lottery process, and therefore should be returned by the first Monday in March deadline. For siblings to receive priority status under the sibling rule, a student must currently attend ArtSpace and re-enter the following year. Once enrolled, students are not required to re-apply in subsequent years. However, families must notify the office by May 15 to confirm their enrollment for the following year. Parent Open Houses and tours are available for prospective families. Deadlines: For the current year, applications will be accepted until the twentieth day of the academic year. Students will not be enrolled after the twentieth day. For the following year, applications will be accepted beginning the first day of the current school year. Those received prior to the first Monday in March at 4:00 will be included in the Enrollment Lottery, while others will be placed on the wait list in the order received. II.ADMISSION Students who seek admission into Artspace Charter School must be admitted either by the Lottery or the wait list for their grade level. Applicants must document their academic achievement level to ensure appropriate grade placement. Any presentation of inaccurate information on the application, or during enrollment, regarding a student’s academic record or situation could potentially result in a loss of placement or enrollment. III.ENROLLMENT Once an applicant is offered a spot, parents must return the Enrollment Form, Request for Transcripts, and the Emergency Contact/Release forms with all signatures. A student will not be allowed to attend without these signed forms in the school office. If an IEP or a 504 is currently in place for a student, a copy must be attached to the Enrollment Form in order for the enrollment to be considered “complete”. These documents will be reviewed before the applicant will be enrolled to insure appropriate services are offered. If a student is admitted and then is retained at the same grade level at the prior school, the student will lose their enrollment and be placed at the end of the wait list for that grade level. ArtSpace Charter School will abide with the grade level determination of the school where students are enrolled at the time of acceptance. IV.LOTTERY A.General Lottery Policy By law, charter schools must conduct a Lottery to fill any openings by grade level. Currently enrolled families are contacted in January and asked if they have any siblings to be enrolled and included in the Lottery. Sibling applications should be returned by the first Monday in March at 4:00. An applicant can be included in the Lottery for only one grade level. For the Lottery, the number of openings is determined in March, and is based upon:
Completed applications received by the first Monday in March at 4:00 will be included in the Lottery. Completed applications received AFTER 4:00 on this day will be placed on our wait list by grade level in the order received. The Lottery will be held on the last Tuesday in March, and is open to the public. B.The Lottery Process For each completed application, an index card with the applicant’s name and grade will be created. However, for lottery and wait list purposes, twins and other multiples are entered under one surname. Cards are drawn one at a time to fill all openings, and then any additional cards are drawn to determine the order of the wait list per grade level. By law, cards are drawn first for children of teachers, T.A.s, and principals. Then, cards are drawn for siblings of currently enrolled students. Finally, cards for all other applicants are drawn. Three separate individuals are involved – one to draw cards, one to record and one to verify the results – during the open meeting. Families are notified in writing of Lottery results (grade placement or wait list placement) within two weeks. Enrollment forms are due two weeks after notice of acceptance. Families MUST reply and notify the school of acceptance within two weeks, clarifying their decision to accept or decline the enrollment, or placement could be lost. For an applicant who is selected for admission and decides NOT to enroll, the next applicant on the wait list for that grade will be notified immediately for enrollment. V.WAIT LIST A wait list will be established whenever ArtSpace Charter School’s capacity is exceeded, and students on the list will be contacted if and when an opening occurs. A separate wait list is maintained for each grade level. When an applicant is placed on the wait list, the application is held until a new enrollment period begins. Families will be contacted regarding the new enrollment period, upcoming Lottery, Parent Open House dates and are given new applications. New students will not be enrolled after the twentieth day of school. When an opening becomes available, applicants are offered a slot according to the order of the wait list. The applicant is notified and given a specified time frame in which to accept or decline the opening. To secure enrollment, appropriate forms must be returned to the school office within two weeks. Applicants will be updated on the wait list placement periodically in the spring and summer, usually via postcard. General Enrollment Policy ArtSpace Charter School abides by all North Carolina school enrollment laws. ArtSpace encourages diversity and does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, economic standing, religion, or disability of the child in its admission policies or educational programs. |
