As a North Carolina Public School (funded in large part by tax dollars), ArtSpace Charter School is not under the jurisdiction of Asheville City or Buncombe County School Districts but is governed by a nonprofit corporation.
Our parent corporation is Partnership for Art at the Core of Education, Inc. (P.A.C.E., Inc), a 501(c)3 and ArtSpace is governed by the P.A.C.E., Inc. Board of Directors. The Executive Director of ACS is hired by and directly reports to the Board of Directors.

Katie Cornell – Board Chair
Bringing people together through the arts is Katie’s passion, and that is just what she tries to do as the Executive Director of the Asheville Area Arts Council. Along with AAAC’s dedicated Board of Directors, she works to amplify what is happening in Buncombe County’s vibrant arts communities and ensure the continued sustainability and growth of the areas richly diverse cultural sector. Katie has more than 19 years of experience working in the Asheville arts sector and holds a Master’s degree in Arts Leadership & Cultural Management from Colorado State University and a BA in Drama from UNC Asheville. She is the President of the Western Arts Agencies of North Carolina, and the Chair of both the City of Asheville’s Public Art & Cultural Commission and the ArtSpace Charter School Board. Katie also serves on the Buncombe County School Arts Advisory Council, the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce Business Association Committee, and the BCTDA’s Tourism Partner Organization Committee.
Melissa Redden – Staff Representative
Melissa serves in the non-voting role of staff representative for PACE. This will be Melissa’s sixth year teaching third grade at ArtSpace, and her fourteenth year teaching in Western North Carolina. Melissa earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education at Georgia College and State University with a certificate in Arts Integration. She taught for eight years at Brevard Elementary before moving to ArtSpace. She earned her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education and became a National Board Certified Teacher in 2019. In her free time, she enjoys reading, writing, knitting, quilting, being outside, and kickboxing (but most of all, teaching)!
Sharon McRorie – Board Member –has been part of the visual arts community in Western North Carolina for more than 25 years. She is the Education Programs Manager at the Asheville Art Museum. In this position she engages with children and families both onsite and offsite with meaningful creative experiences.
Matthew Baldwin – Board Member – Matthew C. Baldwin is Professor and Coordinator of Religion and Philosophy at Mars Hill University. A resident of Asheville for more than 18 years, he has two children in ArtSpace, JZ in 5th grade and Lena in 8th grade. He holds a PhD in Biblical Studies from the University of Chicago and has published on the Theory and Method of Religious Studies and on the History of Early Christianity. His passions include books, water and surfing, and mycology.
Candace Reilly- Board member
Candace Reilly is the assistant director and curator at Blue Spiral 1 gallery in Asheville. She has been an active member of the arts community in Asheville for almost a decade. Candace currently serves as a community member on the Artspace Board, and is also Vice-Chair and Secretary of the North Carolina Glass Center Board and Co-Chair of the Downtown Asheville Arts District. She holds an MFA in painting and contemporary theory from Savannah College of Art and Design and a BA in art history from Saint Mary’s College, University of Notre Dame. A former art educator and career advocate for the arts, Candace believes that integrated arts education creates a deeper foundation for learning and a more socially cohesive and enriched community.
