Carol Davis (Media Coordinator) was born in Libertyville, IL. Growing up, Carol would spend most of her summers and Christmas' in Fairview, NC. She moved to the area with her family in 1984.

Carol has served ArtSpace from its humble beginnings as a regular volunteer in the classrooms and on both the Board of Directors and as past president of the PTO. She lives with her husband, Jimmy, two children, Neal and Sarah, who is a student at ArtSpace.

 
 

 

 

Tara Reese (Teaching Assistant) joined ArtSpace in 2005 working with the kindergarten classes as a teaching assistant. Prior to joining ArtSpace, she worked as a pre-school teacher, later setting up her own daycare.

She lives in Swannanoa with her husband, David, and their children, Noah and Samantha, who both attend ArtSpace.

 

 
 

 

 

Donna Wright (Teaching Assistant) was born in Yancey County, but spent most of her life living in the Asheville/Swannanoa area. She worked as a nursing assistant and private duty in home health care assistant for many years before joining ArtSpace in 2005.

Donna has been involved in the school since its inception when her daughter Caitlin was a student. She enjoys photography, horseback riding, gardening, camping and spending time with her family and their pets.

 

 
 

 

 

Karen Ponder (Title 1 Tutor) was born in Ithaca, NY. She received her bachelor's in K-12 Art Education from Mars Hill College. She has worked in various capacities at ArtSpace since its inception. In 2006 she began tutoring students in the school.

She lives in Weaverville with her husband, Clay, and their three children, Clay (III), Sean and Megan.

 

 
 

 

 

Hal Smith (One-On-One/Building Manager) was born in Miami, FL. He received his B.A. in English and History from Wofford College. He initially worked for the Department of Social Services and then moved into a career in computer programming, where he was a Senior Systems Analyst in charge of 400 analysts and programmers.

Hal moved to the Asheville area in 1992 where he raised cattle for a while and for more than a decade has coached about 40-50 different soccer teams spanning all age groups. Hal has two older children, Ballin and Rachel.

 

 
 

 

 

Stephanie Wallace (Extended Day Programs Coordinator) has worked at ArtSpace for several years as a substitute teacher and coordinator of the after-care program at the school. In 2007, she will be working full-time coordinating the Extended Day programs and assisting with other tasks.

She previously worked as a Residence Director at Warren Wilson College, taught ESL in France and taught French to adults and children. She loves to garden, travel and cook. She lives with her husband, Adam, in Asheville.

 

 
 

 

 

Cheryl Geiger (Teaching Assistant) recently joined ArtSpace for the 2007-2008 year as a teaching assistant in the elementary level grades. She received her B.A. in Elementary Education from Warren Wilson and completed her student teaching at ArtSpace in 2006.

 

 
 

 

 

Sue Levinsky (Teaching Assistant) has been involved in one capacity or another from the beginning of Art Space Charter School: as a parent, a volunteer and a substitute teacher. Currently she works part-time assisting the middle-school teachers. Sue has two daughters who have attended ArtSpace. She lives with her daughters and husband in West Asheville.

 

 
 

 

 

Steve Lipe (Instruction Technology Coordinator) was born in Kittery, Maine, but went to school in Fayetteville, NC. He earned his B.S. in Recreation Administration and M.A. in Communication Studies from UNC-Greensboro. He received his K-6 teaching certification from UNCA and also has a M.S. in Library Sciences from Appalachian State.

Steve was part of a classroom-based computer pilot program in the Asheville City School system in 1992. Since 1999, he has been a reviewer for software and Internet resources for the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and has done numerous presentations at the annual N.C. Educational Technology Conference in Greensboro. He joined ArtSpace at its inception as a teacher.

 
 

 

Jane Horning (Office Manager) was born and raised in St. Petersburg, FL. She left to attend Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL, where she received a B.S. in Business Education. She worked at SouthTrust Bank eventually becoming the Director of Human Resources.
She has enjoyed diversity in her career working with a television production company and as a household manager for an estate in Tierra Verde, FL. Jane lives with her husband, Tony, and her daughter Elizabeth in Black Mountain. Her son, Jacob, is currently serving in the Marines.

 

 
 

 

 

Juliana Caldwell (Assistant Office Manager) received her B.A. from Carson-Newman College in Tennessee. She moved to Asheville in 1992 and joined ArtSpace in 2005.

She worked previously as the Hospitality Manager at Montreat Conference Center and as a professional Stage Manager. She enjoys reading, walking, practicing Tai Chi, making masks and caring for her two children -- Hannah, who is a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Josh, a student at ACS.
