Ms. Lori’s Summer Letter

July, 2017

Greetings ArtSpace Families!

I hope this letter finds you all enjoying your summer, spending time outside, and connecting with family and friends.  As always, things have been busy around campus with camps, cleaning and exciting projects!

Entering our seventeenth year I am excited about many things.  As I write this, new playground equipment is being installed and this year we will continue to improve both our campus and the interior of our building.  We are super excited that we will be introducing a one-to-one initiative, providing Chromebooks for every 7th and 8th grader to use both at school and at home.  This program will also allow grades 4, 5, and 6 to have their own mobile laptop lab, improving accessibility for these grades as well. Thanks to fundraising efforts by our student council last year, we are installing two water bottle fillers to our drinking fountains (one in the south wing and one in the arts wing).  We are hopeful all our students will drink more water!

We are also excited about the Solar Eclipse that will happen on Monday, August 21st during school hours!  WOW!  Here in Swannanoa we will experience a 99% eclipse.  Students will begin learning about this once in a life-time celestial event as soon as they return to school.  Then on the afternoon of the eclipse all grade levels will be outside to view it and will participate in related, fun learning activities as well.  What a way to kick off a school year!

As in years past, there will be just a few changes in staffing this year.  Ms. Victoria is moving to New Zealand for a year, Ms. Kristie is moving to South Carolina where she and her husband have new jobs, and Ms. Adina is taking a year-long leave of absence to refresh and renew.  We will miss all three of these ladies and wish them well in their new adventures.  Ms. Lyn will still be at ArtSpace, but this year she will be a full-time substitute teacher available to fill in for all grade levels at a moment’s notice and Ms. Stephanie will no longer be working in the front office.

These are big shoes to fill, but we have some awesome new faculty and staff members to do so.  Ms. Kathy Self will join the fourth grade team, teaching math and science and Ms. Katy Copley will teach sixth grade math and science.  Ms. Kristin Bearden is our new School Counselor and Ms.Tina Nadzan joins our Title I Team.  In addition, we have a new position this year, Student Support Coordinator and have hired Mr. Rob Sine for this job.  Welcome back Mr. Rob and welcome aboard Ms. Katy, Ms. Kathy, Ms. Kristin and Ms. Tina!

Don’t forget that Meet the Teacher and Registration Night is Wednesday, August 16th from 4:00-6:00 pm.  As always, attendance this night is mandatory and so very important to our state funding.  I can’t wait to see you all then!

Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Sincerely,

Ms. Lori
