The Diffusers are a group of middle school students who have been trained to facilitate peer mediations. Peer Mediation offers students a chance to sit face-to-face and talk, confidentially and uninterrupted, so each point of view is heard. The focus is on the problem rather than placing blame. After the problem is identified and points of view are shared, students create options for mutual gain and choose a win-win solution. Peer mediation teaches students (disputants AND mediators) effective communication skills that will help them resolve or avoid future conflicts. However, peer mediation is not appropriate for all conflict situations.
